Map and Globe Skills

geography: The study of physical features and living things on the earth's surface

Human geography: The study of how humans interact and affect the environment

Physical geography: The study of the earth’s physical features like vegetation and landforms

Adaptation: The process of making changes to help plants and other living things to survive

Environment: Climate and physical surroundings that plants, animals and humans live in

region:  A place or area that has similar qualities

relative location: The location of a place in relationship to the location of something else.

absolute location: The exact location of something. It is also the spot where the latitude and longitude lines intersect (meet)

compass rose: Diagram or drawing on a map where  you can find cardinal and intermediate directions.

cardinal directions: The four main directions: north, south, east, west

intermediate directions: The directions in between the cardinal directions: northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest

legend: See map key

map key: This is the area on a map that tells what the symbols, colors, lines, patterns or type of letters represent or stand for.

map scale:  A section on a map that gives you a tool to measure the distance between two places

equator: The imaginary line that divides the earth into the northern and southern hemispheres

prime meridian: The imaginary line that divides the earth into eastern and western hemispheres

hemisphere: Half of the globe. Either Northern and Southern, or Eastern and Western.

continent: A landmass on the earth divided or governed into countries.

country: The areas that continents are divided into, allowing for independent rule from each other.

Physical Features: What is found on the earth's surface. Also known as landforms

parallels of latitude: The imaginary lines that are parallel to the equator and run west and east on the globe

meridians of longitude: The imaginary lines the run from the North Pole to the South Pole around the globe.

degrees: These are used to measure the location and distance of places on a map or globe  using parallels or latitude or meridians or longitude.

global grid: See map grid

map grid: The system of latitude lines and longitude lines

coordinates: The pair of degrees or numbers that will tell you the absolute location; where a line of latitude and longitude intersect.

arctic circle: The line of latitude a degree 66.5 degree, to the south of the North Pole.

tropical zone:The area between the Tropic of cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, where it is a tropical and humid climate.
